![]() Beaufort is located in the heart of the famous Low Country of South Carolina. It is the second oldest city in the state and boasts of beautiful pre-Civil war homes and a rich traditional history. The Beaufort Chamber of Commerce (www.beaufortsc.org) is a great place to gather information about the area. Beaufort is located on the Beaufort River and enjoys cool breezes in the summer. The newly renovated Waterfront Park is an ideal place to spend a lazy afternoon or evening. Just down the river is the City of Port Royal. A major urban development project is beginning to take shape that will completely change the face of Port Royal into a great destination. Just across Battery Creek from Port Royal is the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. This base had its roots in the Civil War as a naval base for Union Forces blockading the Confederate ports of Charleston and Savannah. The USS Port Royal CG 73 (www.port-royal.navy.mil) home port Pearl Harbor is named after this area. Continuing south of the Broad River, Beaufort County includes areas of Bluffton and Hilton Head Island. While visiting the area, be sure to visit the locale Donut Connection shops.
